ACCIONA wins Contract 1 of Bruce Highway – Caboolture-Bribie Island Road to Steve Irwin Way (Exit 163)

Contract 1 of the project, worth $137 million, involves upgrading almost six kilometres of the Bruce Highway north of Brisbane from four to six lanes (between Caboolture-Bribie Island Road and Pumicestone Road), including the demolition and reconstruction of four major bridge structures; three interchange modifications; realignment of local service roads; and installation of ITS Smart Motorway technologies. 

This important section of the Bruce Highway is part of a major local, regional and national freight and commuter transport corridor, with connections to Brisbane, Sunshine Coast, north Queensland, Great Dividing Range and Bribie Island. 

During construction, our project team will manage multiple work fronts–complex live traffic conditions, environmental sensitivities, and multiple stakeholders—to deliver a safe, reliable, and flood-proofed Bruce Highway for our client. 

The project will provide opportunities for local workers and businesses, including traineeships and apprenticeships, upskilling for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, and procurement opportunities for local businesses. 

The project win leverages ACCIONA's existing portfolio in the south-east Queensland region, including successful delivery of the Pumicestone Road Interchange Upgrade, and Lendlease Engineering’s strong performance in the delivery of major highway upgrades, including the recent Gateway Upgrade North, M1/M3/Gateway Merge and Cooroy to Curra Section A Contract 3 projects. 

The $662.5 million Bruce Highway Upgrade is jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland governments, with the Australian Government contributing $530 million and the Queensland Government contributing $132.5 million.
