• The show, scheduled for 24 July in Obradoiro Square, will project 3D images on the facade of the Raxoi palace synchronised with a fireworks show and a live music performance
  • This year, in addition to highlighting the cultural importance of the Way of Saint James and the city's architectural and environmental heritage, the show will pay homage to great women of Compostela
  • The event will be carbon-neutral, meaning that the related CO2 emissions will be calculated and offset through a clean energy project, so that the final balance of emissions is zero

22 July 2019.- ACCIONA Producciones y Diseño (APD) is in charge of the "Apostle Fireworks" audiovisual and fireworks display, the high point of the annual festival in honour of the patron saint of Santiago de Compostela, capital of Galicia.

The show, combining mapping projections, live music, special effects, pyrotechnics, lighting and a soundtrack, will be projected on the facade of the Raxoi Palace in Obradoiro Square on 24 July at 23.30. An estimated 5,000 people are expected to attend the 30-minute show, which will be preceded by three hours of special lighting and music in the square.

This year's show focuses on four key areas: the Way of Saint James as a channel of cultural exchange with foreign pilgrims; the city's architecture and its growth; the integration and interdependence between Santiago de Compostela and its rural hinterland; and some great Galician women who have shaped the country's history.

One of visual high points of the projection will be when the city's main buildings are "constructed" on the facade of the Raxoi palace, as if taking the spectators on a trip through time.

This year's show will also commemorate some great women of the present and the recent past who are linked to the city of Santiago de Compostela. The projection will feature poet Rosalía de Castro as well as other less well-known though outstanding women: writer and publisher María Francisca de Isla y Losada, exiled singer María Valverde, poet and playwright Herminia Fariña Cobián, painter Concha Vázquez, feminist teacher María Vázquez Suárez, and many others.

The audiovisual projection will use cutting-edge technology to provide a resolution of 4 megapixels. To this end, ACCIONA Producciones y Diseño will use nine 22,000 lumen video projectors, 28 robotic lighting systems and 20 fixed spotlights, and a 50,000-watt sound system.

The fireworks display will involve 6,015 shells using a total of 366 kg of black powder. It will be provided by RICASA, a Valencia firm specialised in large-scale pyrotechnics with which APD has worked in the past. The live music will be provided by local folk music group Cantigas e Agarimos de Santiago de Compostela.

As a result of ACCIONA's full commitment to sustainability in all its activities, this show will be carbon-neutral; in other words, the related CO2 emissions will be calculated and offset through a clean energy project, so that the final balance of emissions is zero.
