• Brisbane Move, a consortium comprising ACCIONA and Arup, will design and build the new Brisbane Metro project after being selected as Preferred Tenderer
  • Visionary project includes construction of a tunnel and the redesign and upgrade of Brisbane’s Cultural Centre area
  • Expands busway network capacity and reduces bus congestion in the CBD

Brisbane City Council has selected Brisbane Move (ACCIONA together with Arup)as Preferred Tenderer to design and build the new Brisbane Metro project, a rapid transit system consisting of high-frequency, high-capacity bi-articulated electric vehicles that will serve the central business district of Queensland’s most populous city.

The Brisbane Metro project is set to support more than 2,600 jobs and assist in Queensland’s COVID-19 economic recovery.

This project follows the iconic Legacy Way Tunnel that Transcity, an ACCIONA-led consortium, undertook with Brisbane City Council in 2011-15.

Fernando Fajardo, ACCIONA Regional Director, expressed his delight at the confidence Brisbane City Council has placed in ACCIONA, and believes “the collaboration between the client and contractor will be a great benefit for the people of Brisbane, as another quality infrastructure project further advances Brisbane as one of the most liveable cities in the world.”

Bede Noonan, ACCIONA Managing Director said, “ACCIONA is very proud that Brisbane City Council has once again selected us to work with them on their next major infrastructure investment.

“We enjoy a very strong relationship with Brisbane City Council and look forward to continuing to deliver jobs and economic opportunities for Queensland.”

Beth Woods, Arup’s Queensland Leader said, “Arup is extremely proud to help create a sustainable, city-shaping project that will provide greater movement, greater growth and create more jobs and investment opportunities for Brisbane.”

Project details

The works include delivering on the Adelaide Street Vision, a new tunnel in Adelaide Street that minimise the impact on businesses, pedestrians, public transport users and trees, a new active transport connection at North Quay and an upgrade of Brisbane’s Cultural Precinct.

The work will see traffic removed from Victoria Bridge converting it into a bridge exclusively used by buses, pedestrians and cyclists. This will see Victoria Bridge changed to three lanes for bus and Metro services, providing a bi-directional bikeway and improved pedestrian path widths.
