Wind energy is electricity generated from the kinetic energy of moving air. As wind passes over a wind turbine's blades, their aerofoil shape causes them to rotate. That rotation drives a generator housed in the nacelle at the top of the tower, which converts mechanical energy into electrical energy.
The electricity produced by each turbine then travels through underground cabling to a substation within the wind farm, where the voltage is stepped up so the power can be carried long distances with minimal loss. From there it enters the transmission network and is distributed to homes, businesses and industry.
Wind is a renewable resource. It is generated continuously by the sun heating the earth's surface unevenly, which means — unlike coal, gas or oil — it cannot be depleted and requires no fuel to be extracted, transported or burned.
A single modern onshore wind turbine can supply electricity to several thousand homes. At ACCIONA Energía's MacIntyre Wind Precinct in Queensland, each 5.7 MW Nordex Delta 4000 turbine generates enough clean electricity to power approximately 4,300 Australian households a year.
Across the full precinct, 162 turbines with a combined capacity of 923 MW are projected to supply clean electricity to nearly 700,000 homes and avoid around 3 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually.
How many houses a wind turbine can power depends on three variables: the turbine's rated capacity, the strength and consistency of the wind resource at the site, and average household electricity consumption in that region. Turbine technology is also a factor. Machines installed 20 or 30 years ago typically had capacities below 1 MW and powered a few hundred homes each. Advances in blade design, materials and real-time wind monitoring mean a single turbine today produces several times more electricity from the same footprint.
Wind turbine output is measured in two different ways, and the distinction matters. Rated capacity is the maximum power a turbine can generate at any given moment — 5.7 MW for each Delta4000 turbine at MacIntyre. Annual generation is what it actually delivers across a year, which for a turbine of that size in a strong Australian wind resource is in the order of 20,000 MWh.
At precinct scale, MacIntyre's 162 turbines represent 923 MW of installed capacity, making it one of the largest onshore wind farms in the world. The precinct is already exporting up to 461 MW of clean energy to the grid during commissioning, and has the potential to expand toward 2,000 MW of total capacity.

Desalination is the process of removing salt and other minerals from seawater or brackish water to produce safe, clean drinking water. As climate change reduces the reliability of rainfall and traditional freshwater sources, desalination has become one of the most effective and climate-independent solutions to long-term water security.
ACCIONA is a world leader in desalination, specialising exclusively in reverse osmosis (RO) technology - the most energy-efficient and environmentally responsible desalination method available. Globally, we have delivered over 92 desalination plants, ranging from the smallest to the biggest to the world.
In Australia, our flagship project is the Adelaide Desalination Plant, the first in the country to incorporate advanced ultrafiltration membranes and a two-stage RO system, supplying drinking water to two million people.

Wastewater treatment removes solids, organic matter, nutrients and pathogens from sewage and industrial effluent. A wastewater treatment plant works in three key stages: primary settles out solids, secondary uses micro-organisms to consume dissolved organic matter, and tertiary applies filtration and disinfection to produce water of suitable quality for environmental discharge and or water reuse.

In Australia, this ranges from drinking water infrastructure such as the Prospect Pre-Treatment Plant for Sydney Water and the Mundaring Water Treatment Plant in Western Australia, through to wastewater facilities including Kingborough Wastewater Treatment Plant in Tasmania to the upgrade and expansion of the Glenfield and Liverpool plants as part of the Malabar Water Reclamation system in New South Wales.
Globally, we have delivered more than 128 drinking-water plants and over 330 wastewater-treatment plants. One third of the water we treat is in water-scarce countries.
Integrated delivery means treatment and reuse are designed together, so recovered water displaces demand for potable supply. This work supports UN Sustainable Development Goal 6: Clean water and sanitation.
Modern desalination uses reverse osmosis (RO).
Clean seawater is forced under high pressure through semi-permeable membranes fine enough to block salt ions while letting water molecules pass. What emerges is fresh water on one side and concentrated brine on the other.
The process runs in five stages:
- Intake. Seawater drawn from the ocean, ideally from a water depth that reduces marine impact and has low turbidity water;
- Pre-treatment. Solids separation / filtration removes sediment and organic matter;
- Reverse osmosis. High-pressure pumps drive water through the membranes, with energy recovery devices reusing pressure from the reject stream.
- Post-treatment. Minerals are added back and water disinfected to meet Australian Drinking Water Guidelines.
- Distribution and brine return. Treated water enters the network; brine is dispersed through outfall diffusers.
RO as a technology has largely replaced older thermal desalination, which boils seawater and uses far more energy per litre. ACCIONA works exclusively with reverse osmosis for this reason. Our Adelaide Desalination Plant shows the approach at scale, drawing seawater through a 1.5 km intake tunnel and recovering energy from the saline concentrate before discharge.
ACCIONA has delivered water infrastructure in Australia since 2012 and is one of the country's most experienced desalination providers, with major projects in South Australia, Tasmania, Western Australia and New South Wales.
- Adelaide Desalination Plant, South Australia. Australia's first plant of its kind, with a capacity of 100 GL/year (300ML/day) supplying into a network of two million people. ACCIONA built it in joint venture and operates it under a 20-year contract.
- Eyre Peninsula Desalination Plant, South Australia. ACCIONA is the major construction partner for this plant near Port Lincoln, with a capacity of 5.3 GL/year (14.5 ML/day), serving around 35,000 SA Water customers. The marine pipeline is tunnelled beneath the shoreline to protect the coastal environment.
- Alkimos Seawater Desalination Plant, Western Australia. ACCIONA leads the consortium delivering Perth's next major water source. Stage 1 will deliver 50 GL/year (150 ML/day) from 2028.
- Prospect Pre-Treatment Plant, New South Wales. Upgrade for Sydney Water, with a treatment capacity of 182 GL/year (500ML/day), supporting the plant that supplies around 85% of Greater Sydney's households.
- Mundaring Water Treatment Plant, Western Australia. ACCIONA upgraded the historic system with the new Mundaring Water Treatment Plant which provides treatment performance and reliability. The plant has the ability to be expanded to a treatment capacity of 87.6 GL/year (240 ML/day)

A tunnel boring machine (TBM) excavates and lines a tunnel in one continuous operation. A rotating cutterhead grinds through soil or rock, the spoil is carried back through the machine by conveyor, and an erector immediately behind places precast concrete segments to form the permanent lining. The machine then pushes off that completed ring to advance.
Ground conditions determine the machine. Earth pressure balance TBMs hold excavated material under pressure at the face in soft ground; slurry TBMs use pressurised fluid in water-bearing sands; hard rock TBMs use disc cutters.
ACCIONA operates its own TBM fleet and holds world records for advance rates, including 79.5 metres in a single day on the Quito metro. In Australia we are tunnelling beneath Sydney Harbour on the Western Harbour Tunnel and building rail tunnels for Suburban Rail Loop East.

- Beverley — Australia's largest registered jack-up barge. At 59.6 by 32 metres, she lowers 78-metre legs to the seabed and lifts clear of the water, with a 400-tonne crane and accommodation for 50 enabling 24-hour offshore work. First deployed on the offshore intake for the Alkimos Seawater Desalination Plant.
