In its ambitions to strengthen cultural awareness, cultural competency and relationships with Traditional Owners and First Nations people across the areas where ACCIONA Energia operates, the company is committed to equipping its team members with the knowledge required to engage meaningfully, and to better understand Australia’s rich and ongoing First Nations history.
ACCIONA Energía staff headed to Bendigo to attend a full-day Djarra Cultural Competency Program facilitated by Dumawul, a social enterprise within the Dja Dja Wurrung corporation, the Traditional Owners of the area on which ACCIONA Energia’s proposed Nyaninyuk wind farm is located. This all-encompassing program was designed to deepen participants' understanding of social responsibility and cultural awareness, with a focus on respecting the cultural heritage of the Traditional Owners in the area. Participants reflected on the significance of the experience, stating:
- "For me, the day was an opportunity to listen and learn. It was really nice to be in a safe place to ask questions and explore."
- "For everyone to hear the more truthful history was important, and I hope we continue to reflect on this."
The program concluded with a moving smoking ceremony, allowing participants to feel a deeper connection to the land and culture they are working within. The overall takeaway was an enhanced commitment to ensuring future projects are approached with respect for cultural values, ensuring more informed and sensitive planning and applications.
ACCIONA Energia is committed to building positive and meaningful relationships with the First Nations communities where its projects are based and to continue contributing to reconciliation in Australia.
“The opportunity to guide others through these experiences strengthens our relationships and brings deeper meaning to the work we do." Luana Sanders, Senior First Nations Engagement Advisor at Acciona Energía
