ACCIONA has successfully installed a 40-tonne tower crane at the North Cammeray site in New South Wales to support construction of the ventilation building for the NSW Government’s Western Harbour Tunnel project.

ACCIONA has successfully installed a 40-tonne tower crane at the North Cammeray site in New South Wales to support construction of the ventilation building for the NSW Government’s Western Harbour Tunnel project.

The crane was erected in early December 2024 to address complex logistical and spatial challenges on the congested site.

Richard Collins, Project Manager – Surface Civil North, oversaw the installation.

“This crane is a critical enabler for our surface works at North Cammeray,” Mr Collins said.

“Its reach and capacity allow us to safely manage deliveries and construction activities across a very constrained footprint.”

The crane stands 60 metres high with a 110-metre boom, selected specifically to span the entire ventilation building and reach as far as the Ernest Street Bridge.

Its electric power system was chosen to minimise noise impacts for nearby residents, reflecting ACCIONA’s commitment to community-sensitive construction practices.

Due to limited space and multiple active work fronts, the crane’s components were delivered in carefully staged sequences.

ACCIONA conducted a series of safety risk workshops and methodology reviews to ensure the installation met rigorous safety standards.

Collaboration with Transport for NSW and other stakeholders was key to the crane’s successful deployment.

The crane will play a central role in managing logistics and materials handling for the ventilation building, which is a vital part of the broader infrastructure upgrade.

Its installation marks a milestone in the coordination between tunnel, civil, and building teams working on site.

ACCIONA’s integrated approach continues to drive progress on the Western Harbour Tunnel project, with the crane enabling efficient and safe delivery of critical infrastructure.
