HumeLink East will save more than $800,000 in fuel costs and 1,100 tonnes of CO2 by using hybrid office caravans and generators on the project.

The project is saving the equivalent of 425 Melbourne to Sydney flights by using a fleet of 15 hybrid office caravans powered by solar panels integrated with lithium battery storage, saving almost $100,000 over the life of the project.

These hybrid office caravans have replaced standard diesel generator powered site offices and have been 99.9 per cent self-sufficient since the beginning of 2026.

Battery-generator hybrid systems at Woodhouselee and Yass

At the project's Woodhouselee site, a battery-generator system has also significantly reduced fuel consumption and emissions through cycle charging, where diesel generators charge lithium batteries while operating.

This has reduced generator run time at the site by 88 per cent - the equivalent of 253 Melbourne to Sydney flights, or planting 2,835 trees.

During the first four months of operation, both hybrid solutions have reduced diesel fuel consumption by more than 8,000 litres, resulting in lower emissions and quieter, more efficient site operations.

In March 2026 a battery-generator hybrid system was connected to the 300-bed worker accommodation facility at Yass to decrease reliance on diesel generators. In just the first month of operation, diesel use was reduced by 67 per cent - a reduction expected to equate to more than 350,000 litres of diesel saved over the life of the camp.

Driving the project's sustainability commitment

HumeLink East Project Director Carel Nagel said: "This is part of our commitment to environmental sustainability and responsible construction, and it's making a huge difference to our impact and operating costs.

"I'm really proud of the team for embracing these simple solutions which are already having such a big impact on our sustainability."

ACCIONA Sustainability Advisor for HumeLink East Sally Costopoulos said: "Reducing diesel consumption on rural large scale linear infrastructure is a massive challenge given the distances our fleet have to travel each week.

"By investing in hybrid generator solutions we have been able to increase our reductions in both diesel use and our project emissions - which is a great win for the project."

A significant contribution to the project's environmental impact

Using both the hybrid caravans and battery-generator systems over the life of the project, the savings produced will be the equivalent of taking 483 cars off Australian roads for one year, or over 50,000 trees absorbing CO2 for one year.
