The Somerton Intermodal Terminal in Melbourne is one of Australia’s largest freight infrastructure projects, designed to transform how freight moves across Victoria and the national network.
Delivered by ACCIONA for the Intermodal Terminal Company, the facility strengthens connectivity between road, rail and port, while enabling more efficient and sustainable freight movement.
At full capacity, the terminal is expected to remove up to 500,000 truck trips from Melbourne’s roads each year, significantly reducing congestion, fuel use and carbon emissions.
Supporting this outcome, ACCIONA partnered with Salix to design and deliver complex turnout and trackwork solutions, along with integrated crane rail systems to support terminal operations.
The project highlights the value of collaboration in delivering complex rail infrastructure and positions Somerton as a key enabler of more reliable, efficient and sustainable freight movement.
