The Mudies Creek Bridge upgrade was delivered ahead of schedule by ACCIONA, with the new flood-resilient crossing on the Golden Highway opened in the NSW Upper Hunter on 13 July.

A $133 million investment in regional connectivity

The $133 million Golden Highway program, jointly funded by the Federal and State Governments, includes the new 30-metre single-span bridge and a one-kilometre highway realignment to deliver a smoother road surface and improved flood resilience.

Built to withstand a one-in-100-year flood

Standing about five metres higher than the previous crossing, the bridge is designed to withstand a one-in-100-year flood, keeping this critical route open for longer during severe weather and enabling faster reopening after floodwaters recede.

Supporting local jobs and regional industry

Construction began in late 2024, with ACCIONA employing up to 135 local and regional workers throughout the project. The upgrade is part of a series of improvements along the Golden Highway aimed at supporting regional industries and communities that depend on this key freight corridor.

Federal Member for Hunter opens the bridge

Federal Member for Hunter Dan Repacholi, who opened the bridge, said the benefits of the project extend well beyond the immediate area.

“This upgrade of the Golden Highway will deliver benefits that reach far beyond the thousands of people who drive on this road every day,” Mr Repacholi said.

“The Hunter is an economic powerhouse for the nation, generating billions of dollars in GDP and exports through mining, agriculture and other industries.”
