ACCIONA has launched a targeted training program in Goulburn New South Wales, Australia, to upskill local workers for the HumeLink East energy infrastructure project, creating new employment opportunities and addressing regional skills shortages.

Carel Nagel, Project Director, emphasised the importance of local participation. "This project is about more than infrastructure, it’s about investing in people," Mr. Nagel said.

"By training residents in civil construction, we’re building a skilled workforce that can contribute to future green energy developments across the region."

The four-week program, developed in partnership with Training Services NSW, focuses on equipping participants with essential tickets and qualifications to operate heavy machinery safely and effectively.

More than 30 locals enrolled, many seeking a career change after years in warehousing, labouring or customer service roles. Participants receive hands-on training with excavators, dozers and other plant equipment, along with safety protocols and operational checks.

All uniforms and protective gear are provided at no cost, removing barriers to entry and ensuring equitable access. Feedback from trainees has been overwhelmingly positive.

Many expressed excitement at the chance to work close to home, gain job security, and pursue long-held ambitions in civil construction.

Several noted the significance of being part of a major infrastructure project in their own community. The initiative also reflects ACCIONA’s commitment to social legacy outcomes.

By prioritising local employment, the project taps into existing knowledge of the terrain and fosters long-term community engagement.

Matching candidates to training based on experience and aptitude has ensured strong alignment between workforce needs and individual potential.

As HumeLink East progresses, ACCIONA anticipates continued demand for skilled operators to support extensive earthworks and energy infrastructure development.

The success of this training program sets a precedent for future workforce initiatives across Australia’s emerging green energy sector.

This approach underscores ACCIONA’s dedication to sustainable development that empowers communities and builds lasting capacity in regional areas.
