Owned and operated by ACCIONA, Kwinana Energy Recovery (KER) located just south of Perth in Western Australia, is the nation’s first energy recovery facility.
It represents a turning point in how Australia can manage waste and produce energy.
Energy Recovery is a viable and more sustainable alternative to landfill, where waste from councils and industry can instead be used to create electricity.
The widely adopted technology – used in more than 2,000 facilities globally - thermal recovers the energy from non-recyclable waste and by diverting waste from landfills and generating energy, we significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions particularly methane, a potent contributor to climate change.
The facility has been developed through partnerships with local councils, industry leaders and global technology providers, providing an alternative to landfill.
Kwinana Energy Recovery processes up to 460,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste annually, waste that would otherwise go to landfill.
Using advanced and proven technology, the facility converts this waste into 38 MW of baseload renewable electricity, enough to power over 55,000 Perth households.
In addition to exporting power, the facility recovers over 10,000 tonnes of valuable metals from the incinerator bottom ash.
This metal is then recycled and put back into use. The remaining bottom ash can then go on to be used in the construction industry to further support the circular economy.
By pioneering proven thermal recovery technology locally, KER sets the benchmark for future projects. Across its 25-year operational life, KER will provide permanent jobs, reduce council waste management costs and strengthen WA’s energy security.
ACCIONA is complementing our local expertise with our global experience to bring the credentials, capability and expertise that is required to provide timely, certain completion and operations of these important projects.
As Australia looks to build a cleaner and more sustainable future, energy recovery is now turning waste into a resource and creating energy that powers communities.
