The first of Melbourne’s new X'Trapolis 2.0 passenger trains entered passenger service in May 2026.

ACCIONA is proud of its role in the launch of these state-of-the-art trains, as lead contractor in a joint venture comprising WSP and Metro Trains Melbourne, delivering the expanded Kananook Stabling Yards in 2025.

From 8 to 21 Trains: Kananook stabling yard expanded for Melbourne's Rail Future

The works, undertaken for VIDA Rail, transformed the existing yard into a fully functional stabling and maintenance precinct connected to the Frankston Line.

The expansion increased capacity from 8 to 21 trains, providing critical infrastructure for the rollout of 25 next-generation trains under the Victorian Government’s $986 million investment.

A modern operational hub for Melbourne's Rail Network

Maria Koutsimpiris, Alliance General Manager, said the project was essential for preparing Melbourne’s rail network for future demand.

"Expanding the Kananook facility was about more than increasing stabling capacity," Ms Koutsimpiris said.

"It created a modern operational hub that enables the integration of new trains and supports a more reliable network for passengers."

The upgraded facility includes a new maintenance shed, wash facilities and improved connections to the metropolitan network.

These enhancements ensure the yard can support higher service frequencies and modern operational requirements associated with the Metro Tunnel and high-capacity signalling systems.

X'trapolis 2.0 - Replacing Melbourne's ageing comeng fleet

The X'Trapolis 2.0 fleet is designed to manage high passenger volumes on some of Melbourne’s busiest corridors, replacing the ageing Comeng trains that have served the network since the 1980s.

By delivering the stabling yard upgrades ahead of the fleet’s introduction, the project ensured the infrastructure was in place to maintain and service the new trains efficiently.

Stage 2 complete building long-term resilence for Melbourne's suburban rail

The completion of Stage 2 at Kananook represents a significant step in modernising Melbourne’s suburban rail system and improving long-term network resilience.

The expanded yard provides a foundation for future operational flexibility as the city’s transport needs continue to grow.
