ACCIONA has introduced hybrid generators with battery storage to power crib sheds on the M80 Ring Road Completion project in Melbourne, achieving a 40% reduction in diesel consumption and saving 33 kilograms of CO₂ emissions daily. The initiative, launched in September 2025, supports ACCIONA’s decarbonisation goals by providing cleaner energy in grid-limited locations.
Amelia Goonerage, Innovation Coordinator, highlighted the significance of the technology. "The main thing is that we can use way less fuel, so they allow us to decarbonise in locations that were previously really difficult to decarbonise due to a lack of access to the grid or lower-carbon technology," Ms Goonerage said. "It’s a great way to reduce the footprint from our generators."
The hybrid system combines Pramac 45kVa diesel generators with battery energy storage systems (BESS). The generator charges the battery at peak efficiency and shuts off when not needed, allowing the battery to discharge in response to demand. This smart cycling reduces unnecessary fuel burn and enables quieter operation, particularly beneficial for night-time use.
Two ACCIONA-owned units have been installed in the North Zone. The first unit is currently operating at the M80 Interchange. A second unit operated at the Boyd Street site until the compound was recently connected to the grid. Prior to deployment, teams from Plant & Equipment, Innovation & Corporate Development, and M80’s Sustainability team inspected the equipment at ACCIONA’s Port Melbourne workshop to assess performance and logistics.

The technology has proven effective in reducing environmental impact while maintaining reliable power supply for site operations. The 33kg daily CO₂ savings contribute to broader sustainability targets and demonstrate the potential of hybrid systems in infrastructure projects.
This deployment aligns with ACCIONA’s commitment to innovation and sustainability, showcasing how collaborative efforts can deliver practical solutions for low-carbon construction. The success of the hybrid generators during Sustainable September reinforces ACCIONA’s leadership in advancing environmentally responsible infrastructure.
