Half of the precast concrete segments required for the NSW Government’s Western Harbour Tunnel project have now been produced by ACCIONA at our Emu Plains facility in Sydney, marking an important step forward in the delivery of this major transport infrastructure project.
This achievement represents a key milestone in preparing for tunnel excavation works and ensuring the project remains on track to deliver improved transport connections for the community.
Manufacturing at scale
More than 13,000 concrete segments are being manufactured, each weighing around 15 tonnes, to line the 1.5-kilometre section of the twin tunnels being excavated by our two tunnel boring machines (TBMs) beneath Sydney Harbour. These segments will provide structural support and waterproofing for the new transport corridor.
Reaching the halfway point confirms that production systems, workforce capability and quality controls are operating effectively at scale. It also signals that the supply chain is ready to maintain a continuous flow of segments to support tunnel boring machine operations now that excavation has begun.
A diverse and skilled workforce
The Emu Plains facility is powered by a diverse team, with women representing one third of the workforce. This approach supports broader industry efforts to create inclusive employment opportunities in construction.
Quality and what's next
Every segment undergoes rigorous quality checks before transport to the tunnel site, ensuring durability and long-term performance for this major infrastructure project.
Production will continue until all segments are complete, enabling excavation to progress without interruption and contributing to the timely delivery of the Western Harbour Tunnel.
