The M80 Upgrade in Melbourne has reached a major milestone, with Geotech completing more than half of its piling scope as of late October 2025. The achievement marks significant progress on critical infrastructure works supporting both road and rail occupations across the project’s South Zone.
Ryan Nugent, Piling Superintendent, acknowledged the favourable conditions contributing to the team’s success. “The M80 project has had some excellent ground conditions from south to north,” Mr Nugent said. “That makes piling a bit easier and allows us to maintain momentum across multiple work fronts.”
To date, Geotech has completed 2,400 of the planned 4,500 piles, poured 20,500m³ of concrete, and installed 4,200 tonnes of steel. Up to six piling rigs were deployed on site, including a 100-tonne rig capable of reaching heights of up to 28 metres. The deepest pile installed so far measures 30 metres. Also deployed was our Liebherr electric piling rig.
The team has supported eight rail occupations in the South Zone, including a major road and rail blitz that ran through October. Night-shift mobilisations and coordinated operations have enabled continuous progress while minimising disruption to commuters and local communities.
Up to 30 crew members, along with five trainees, have contributed to the piling program, which plays a vital role in preparing the corridor for upcoming traffic switches and structural works.
With piling now past the halfway mark, crews will continue through several critical road occupations before completing the remaining scope. The M80 Upgrade is a key component of Victoria’s transport infrastructure strategy, improving safety, reducing congestion, and enhancing connectivity across Melbourne’s northern suburbs.
