ACCIONA is intensifying geotechnical inspections across the M80 Ring Road Completion project in Melbourne as piling, excavation, and bulk earthworks progress through all sections.
The initiative ensures that construction activities align with the project’s design specifications and regulatory requirements.
Led by ACCIONA's Engineering & Design team, the inspections are critical to verifying that ground conditions meet the minimum strength thresholds under various loading scenarios.
These checks are essential for the structural integrity of the project’s infrastructure, which spans from the M80 and Greensborough Bypass to the Watsonia Road bridge.
Chung Ki Ng, a Geotechnical Design Engineer, is overseeing the on-site geotechnical inspections.
“To carry out these geotechnical inspections, we use a variety of tools including hammers, scrapers, and photo boards, and even smartphones with built-in functions for monitoring,” Mr Ng said.
“This allows us to never miss the details out on-site.” he said.
Working in collaboration with AECOM, consultants, and delivery teams, the Engineering and Design team conducts field tests in accordance with AS 1726 standards.
These tests assess soil and rock strength against the geotechnical design parameters, ensuring compliance with both internal specifications and Department of Transport and Planning obligations.
The inspections cover excavation depths, soil conditions, and embankment slopes, with findings compared against design drawings and project requirements. This rigorous approach supports quality assurance across all phases of the project.
ACCIONA’s geotechnical expertise is backed by ISO-certified quality management systems, reinforcing the company’s commitment to delivering infrastructure that meets the highest standards.
As the M80 Ring Road Completion progresses, ACCIONA’s focus on geotechnical integrity will continue to underpin the safe and efficient delivery of this major transport corridor, supporting long-term resilience and performance.
