ACCIONA is proud to play a key role in Pilbara Ports transformative Lumsden Point development at the Port of Port Hedland, a critical infrastructure project designed to support Australia's emerging critical minerals and renewable energy sectors.

ACCIONA were awarded the contract to design and construct the two new multi-user wharfs at Lumsden Point in December 2024.

Joshua Madden, Senior Project Manager at ACCIONA, highlighted the project's strategic significance.

"This development represents more than infrastructure - it's a gateway for Australia's economic future," Mr Madden said.

"By creating flexible, innovative port facilities, we're enabling the seamless export of critical minerals and import of renewable energy infrastructure."

The development of Lumsden Point, identified as a priority by Infrastructure Australia, involves dredging an access channel and turning basin. It includes the construction of two new multi-user wharfs and a central access road and service corridor connecting to Great Northern Highway, facilitating private sector investment in a land-side logistics hub.

The two multi-user wharfs - PH5 and PH6 – have been engineered to meet rigorous technical specifications.

These facilities will support the export of lithium and copper concentrates, facilitate the import of oversized renewable energy components like wind turbine blades and solar infrastructure and support the rapid growth of direct shipping services to the Pilbara.

ACCIONA's engineering approach combines two complementary support systems to create a robust underground wall. This method enhances stability and durability, especially in demanding environments.

The wharfs are designed with a 50-year operational life, incorporating robust corrosion protection and geotechnical modelling to ensure long-term structural integrity.

Pilbara Ports will have two new mobile harbour cranes operating on the wharfs, which represent a significant technological advancement.

Two state-of-the-art Konecranes ESP.9 mobile harbour cranes with hybrid technology will provide flexible operational capabilities, enabling rapid transitions between mineral exports, renewable energy imports, and container trade.

Supporting infrastructure for Lumsden Point includes a 2.4 km water main, 22kV underground power connections, and significant upgrades to Great Northern Highway, specifically designed to accommodate oversized renewable energy equipment.

With the first of two new wharfs scheduled for completion in mid-2026, the Lumsden Point development is set to significantly enhance Port Hedland's logistics capabilities.

"Our work at Lumsden Point demonstrates ACCIONA's commitment to creating sustainable, adaptable infrastructure that supports Australia's economic transition," Mr Madden said.

The development will increase port capacity, diversify trade pathways, and provide a critical logistics hub for Australia's expanding critical minerals and renewable energy sectors.
