The Cathedral Rocks Wind Farm has helped to boost local bushfire preparedness with the installation of a 30,000-litre water tank on site.
The tank provides local firefighting crews with direct access to water on site, allowing helicopters to refill quickly during an emergency. This reduces the need to return to Port Lincoln and enables faster, more effective coverage across the region. With water available at all times, helicopters can service the vast area more efficiently, strengthening emergency response capabilities.
ACCIONA Energía has worked closely with the South Australian Country Fire Service (CFS) to develop a bushfire management plan tailored to the site. This partnership ensures the wind farm is well-prepared and able to contribute to emergency response efforts in the region.
Before the wind farm was developed, there was no infrastructure in place to assist firefighting operations in the area.
Located near the southern tip of the Eyre Peninsula, approximately 30 kilometres south-west of Port Lincoln, Cathedral Rocks Wind Farm has been fully operational since 2007. It features 31 turbines and generates up to 62 megawatts of clean energy. The wind farm is operated by ACCIONA Energía and jointly owned by ACCIONA Energِía and Energy Australia, with both companies holding 50% equity.
Greg Napier, Captain of the Lincoln Brigade, SA Country Fire Service
“Having access to water thanks to the aviation dip tank at Cathedral Rocks Wind Farm makes a big difference. It means we can respond faster and cover more ground without needing to fly back to Port Lincoln.”
Sancho Laspalas, ACCIONA Energía Australia Operations Director:
“Bushfire planning has been part of our operations from the start. Working with the CFS helped us make sure the site is equipped to assist with an efficient and effective emergency response, strengthening resilience across the surrounding region.”
