ACCIONA and its delivery partners won the Excellence in Sustainability award for the Victoria Bridge refurbishment at the 2025 Austroads Bridge Awards in June. The project won praise for its unique approach to strengthening and repurposing a vital piece of Brisbane’s infrastructure, with the Brisbane Metro’s Victoria Bridge team wowing the industry with their innovative and sustainable approach.

The works by delivery partners including ACCIONA, Brisbane City Council, Arup, Freyssinet, and Nick Stevens Consulting, focused on upgrading the bridge to meet current requirements through innovative strengthening techniques, reducing material waste, and minimising environmental impact. The bridge was also a finalist in the Excellence in Asset Management and Maintenance category.

These accolades reflect the project’s outstanding achievements in innovation and sustainable infrastructure solutions.

Sharing technical expertise

During the Austroads Bridge Conference, the Victoria Bridge team proudly showcased its engineering excellence and innovation.

Held every 3 to 5 years in a major capital city, the conference brings together professionals from across the transport infrastructure sector, including road authorities, consultants, contractors, academics, and suppliers. It’s one of the industry’s top forums for collaboration and knowledge sharing.

Our team presented four technical papers that explored the scale and complexity of the Victoria Bridge refurbishment and strengthening works:

In the lead-up to the conference, the team also presented at a Concrete Institute of Australia seminar, further reinforcing our leadership in sustainable infrastructure.
