ACCIONA Energía has successfully completed the commissioning and start of commercial operations of the Aldoga Solar Farm (480MWp), located approximately 20 km north-west of Gladstone on the central Queensland coast.
The Aldoga Solar Farm will generate clean electricity equivalent to the annual consumption of approximately 185,000 households and avoid around 934,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year—an impact comparable to removing 360,000 combustion vehicles from the roads. The asset’s entire renewable energy output will be supplied to Queensland’s state-owned energy company Stanwell Corporation, under a 15-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), playing a pivotal role to step up decarbonisation in the region.
The construction of Aldoga created 350 local jobs during peak periods, and it will now employ 15 people permanently to operate and maintain the facility. Australian-made materials and components were used to bring the project to fruition, procuring up to AU$150 million (€90 million) in goods and services from local businesses and suppliers.
The solar farm has also contributed to infrastructure upgrades, such as Flynn Road, while also funding individual projects in education, healthcare, and cultural development in the area, as well as facilitated workplace volunteering.
As part of the community activities, ACCIONA Energía launched a Small Grants Program to fund initiatives from a wide range of local organisations, from schools and emergency services to community associations and cultural groups. Among the beneficiaries were the Parent and Citizens organisation of the Yarwun State School, which provided much-needed laptops for the year five and six students, ensuring they have the same opportunity for learning as the larger local schools.
The company has also committed to a Legacy Investment Program, supporting larger multi-year projects such as the Calliope Community Hub, a new facility designed to host health, social services, and community events.
The commissioning of Aldoga is another step forward in ACCIONA Energía’s growth in Australia as a strategic country. The company has almost 2GW of renewable energy installed or under construction, across wind and solar technologies in Australia. It is currently commissioning the MacIntyre Wind Farm (923MW) in Queensland, one of the largest wind farms in the southern hemisphere.
Gavin Reymond, Managing Director, ACCIONA Energía Australia: “Completing the Aldoga Solar Farm ahead of schedule is a testament to the strong collaboration with local partners. As a renewable energy project developer, owner and operator, ACCIONA Energía is proud to contribute to Queensland’s energy transition with a utility-scale asset that delivers clean power, regional employment, and long-term community investment.”
Michael O’Rourke, CEO, Stanwell Corporation: “We are proud to partner with ACCIONA Energía on the Aldoga Solar Farm and congratulate them on this important milestone. Stanwell has built a diversified energy portfolio of thermal and renewable energy supported by storage assets. As demand continues to grow across the state, we will continue to deliver affordable, reliable and sustainable energy for all of Queensland.
“Under this Power Purchase Agreement, Stanwell will offtake 100 per cent of the output from the Aldoga Solar Farm which will be sold into the spot market or retailed to our commercial and industrial customers.
We look forward to working with ACCIONA Energía on other projects throughout Queensland.”
