ACCIONA has welcomed three high school students to the Suburban Connect, Suburban Rail Loop project in Victoria under the School Based Apprenticeship or Trainee (SBAT) program.

Launched in February 2025, the Apprenticeship or Trainee prograg supports youth employment and vocational training in infrastructure.

The SBAT program enables students to combine part-time employment with training toward a nationally recognised vocational education and training (VET) qualification. It forms part of ACCIONA’s broader commitment to sustainable infrastructure development that benefits communities and builds future workforce capability.

Tyson, based with the Civil Construction team at Clarinda and Clayton, is gaining hands-on experience in site operations.
“The exciting part about construction is being able to see the works you’re involved in begin to take shape over time right in front of your eyes,” Tyson said.

“Getting out on site has made me feel more prepared for a future career in construction,” he said.

Dunsin, also working in Civil Construction across Clarinda and Heatherton, is exploring the dynamic nature of the industry.

“Construction is such an interesting field. There’s always a lot to learn, new things to build and new things to provide solutions for,” Dunsin said.

“I’m excited to think about where I can go.”

Asma, placed with the Health & Safety team at Suburban Connect’s head office, is contributing to critical project functions while developing professional skills.

“It feels good to know I am contributing to a project area as important as health and safety, all while learning on the job,” Asma said.

The SBAT initiative supports ACCIONA’s goal of creating inclusive and future-focused employment pathways.

The initiative also aligns with Suburban Connect’s workforce development strategy, which prioritises local engagement and long-term capability building.

The program will continue to expand across the project, offering more students the opportunity to gain industry experience while completing their education. It reflects ACCIONA’s commitment to investing in young Australians and strengthening the communities in which it operates.
