ACCIONA SAMSUNG BOUYGUES JOINT VENTURE DELIVERS THE M4 AND M8 LINK AHEAD OF SCHEDULE

• The ACCIONA Samsung Bouygues Joint Venture (ASBJV) has delivered one of the final pieces of Australia’s largest road infrastructure project
• The project was delivered two months ahead of schedule and on budget
• The project has employed more than 12,000 people

SYDNEY: The ACCIONA Samsung Bouygues Joint Venture (ASBJV) has delivered one of the final major components of Australia’s largest road infrastructure project, WestConnex – which opened today, two months ahead of schedule.

The 7.5-kilometre mega tunnels provide a critical new link between the M4 at Haberfield and the M8 at St Peters.

ACCIONA CEO, Bede Noonan said, “The WestConnex M4 and M8 Link is a project for ACCIONA to be most proud of. Completing what is the second longest tunnel in the world, our delivery in advance of completion date, our impeccable safety record and consistent project management is testament to our project team as an outstanding measure of success.

During the four years of the project, which began in August 2018, more than 12,000 people have had employment on the project, 40% from Sydney’s Western suburbs, the area that will benefit the most from the new motorway connections.

ASBJV Project Director, Andrew Marsonet said, “The delivery of this vital piece of infrastructure with complex tunnelling and technical challenges displayed the way the Joint Venture team was able to draw on superior leadership and technical skills to deliver not only one of the best quality tunnels in Australia, but ahead of program and on budget.”

Mr Marsonet also said the technical, support and construction teams, as well as the experienced tunnelling, mechanical and electrical and commissioning workforce were dedicated to deliver an exceptional end result, managing the hurdles of COVID lockdowns along the way.

ASBJV has invested more than $60m in Aboriginal participation over the life of the project, including education and employment, cultural awareness training, mentoring programs and the procurement of goods and services from Aboriginal businesses.

The Joint Venture has also invested in the development of female participation in the construction sector, employing one of the largest female workforce on a tunnelling project in New South Wales.

Of the more than 8.7 million tonnes of spoil removed from the excavation of the tunnel, 100% has been beneficially reused on other infrastructure sites in Sydney, another initiative that met the high sustainability targets applied throughout the project to address environmental and economic priorities.
