ACCIONA is proud to collaborate with Transport for NSW to deliver Berrys Bay foreshore parkland at Waverton, NSW.

The project is repurposing this derelict site into new public space, reconnecting Sydneysiders with the harbour at Berrys Bay for the first time in over a century. The site had been earmarked as a temporary construction site for Western Harbour Tunnel but was no longer required after a major shift in construction methodology, enabling the land to be fast-tracked for community use.

Andrew Marsonet, ACCIONA’s Project Director, Western Harbour Tunnel, emphasised the significance of the change. "This is a rare opportunity to return a piece of Sydney’s waterfront to the community," Mr Marsonet said. "By reimagining the site as a public space, we’re honouring its history while creating something truly special for future generations."

A change in tunnel construction methodology, which will now use two of the largest tunnel boring machines in the Southern Hemisphere, removed the need for a temporary construction site at Berrys Bay. This advancement has allowed the project team to redirect its focus toward delivering lasting community infrastructure.

The site, which has remained inaccessible to the public for more than 100 years, holds deep historical significance. Once home to the Woodley’s Shipyard, it played a key role in Sydney’s maritime industry until operations ceased in 2011. We are working closely with local stakeholders to celebrate both Aboriginal and maritime heritage, with key elements of the former Woodley’s Shed, including its iconic signage, set to be retained and integrated into the final design.

New concept renders reveal a welcoming harbourside park featuring an accessible foreshore walkway, play and picnic areas with barbecue facilities, native landscaping extending the bushland, and a striking new pavilion for community-led events. The design also completes connections across the Waverton peninsula with a continuous waterfront pathway stretching from Carradah Park in the east to Balls Head Reserve in the west.

Site establishment commenced in June 2025, with the careful deconstruction of derelict buildings on site including Woodley’s Shed which will have building materials salvaged for reinterpretation in the new pavilion. The project is being delivered in close consultation with the community, local Knowledge holders and key stakeholders to ensure the spaces reflect local values and aspirations.

The Berrys Bay transformation as part of the Western Harbour Tunnel project underscores ACCIONA’s commitment to sustainable infrastructure that enhances our social purpose. Once complete, Berrys Bay foreshore parkland will offer a new destination for recreation, reflection and connection - restoring public access to one of Sydney’s hidden waterfront spaces.
