• Southwest Connex Alliance (ACCIONA, NRW Contracting, MACA Civil, AECOM and Aurecon) named as Preferred Proponent
  • Construction phase to provide significant direct and indirect jobs

ACCIONA, NRW Contracting (NRW) and MACA Civil (MACA) are delighted to announce that Main Roads Western Australia has named the Southwest Connex Alliance (comprising ACCIONA, NRW, MACA, AECOM and Aurecon) as the Preferred Proponent for the Bunbury Outer Ring Road project.

The construction of the Bunbury Outer Ring Road, fully funded for $852 million, will deliver vital infrastructure to provide a safer and more efficient road system for the South West of Western Australia.

The project scope includes the investigation, design and construction of 27 kilometres of four lane dual carriageway which will save motorists significant travel time.

The construction phase will provide significant direct and indirect jobs that will benefit both the State and local community.

Bede Noonan, CEO of ACCIONA, said, “We have a strong track record of working with Western Australian companies on Western Australian projects that deliver Western Australian jobs.

“We are very excited to be working with two of WA’s most distinguished local constructors, NRW and MACA, to deliver a significant number of local jobs and a vital piece of infrastructure.

“While ACCIONA is a global company, it has deep local roots and we maintain a significant local shareholding. We operate under strong Australian leadership with a highly capable domestic workforce and a thorough understanding of the local market.”

“We look forward to bringing our unique mix of local talent and global experience to the Alliance and to maximising local supply chains during the delivery of the project.”

NRW’s CEO and Managing Director, Jules Pemberton said, “This announcement marks a significant milestone in NRW’s strategic evolution to an Australian Tier 1 contractor status and specifically our desire to build a large delivery capability across the Government Infrastructure works sector.”

“The recent acquisition of BGC Contracting together with our existing capability in civil construction has both significantly accelerated and enhanced our ability to participate as a large construction partner in Public infrastructure projects.”

We look forward to working closely with ACCIONA, MACA and our other Alliance partners, together with Main Roads through the Preferred Proponent stage.”

MACA’s CEO and Managing Director, Mike Sutton, said, “MACA is delighted to be a participant in the Southwest Connex Alliance. We look forward to working with our Alliance Partners to deliver a quality infrastructure project for Western Australia.”

The Project

The road will provide an alternative route around Bunbury, connecting Forrest Highway at Australind to Bussell Highway at Gelorup, including grade separated interchanges, rail and river crossings and 20 kilometres of new and upgraded local government roads.

It will provide improved access to Bunbury Port, strengthening Great Bunbury’s position as a regional industrial hub for the southwest. It will also save motorists up to 15 minutes of travel time, by avoiding 13 traffic signals and a level crossing.
