ACCIONA is advancing gender diversity in construction through targeted training and employment initiatives on the Western Harbour Tunnel project in Sydney, supporting women at all career stages and addressing industry skill gaps.

Andrew Marsonet, Western Harbour Tunnel Project Director, emphasised the importance of inclusive workforce development.

"Creating real change means investing in people and removing barriers to opportunity," Mr Marsonet said.

"These programs are not just about training—they’re about building confidence, capability, and long-term careers for women in construction," he said.

The project features the 'Pre-Cast Skills Foundation', a pre-employment training program that equips women with specialised skills to work in Australia’s largest precast operation.

Participants earn a Certificate III in Civil Construction, which prepares them for long-term roles in infrastructure delivery.

To support women facing barriers to employment, ACCIONA has partnered with NSW TAFE, the Department of Corrections, and Future Women.

These collaborations offer career progression and reintegration opportunities, particularly for women re-entering the workforce or transitioning from correctional settings.

For younger women, the 'Building Futures' program introduces high school students to construction careers through work experience, school-based traineeships, and pathways to further education.

The initiative aims to inspire future leaders and diversify the talent pipeline from school age.

Western Harbour Tunnel will connect the Warringah Freeway in North Sydney to the WestConnex M4 and M8 at Rozelle Interchange, helping drivers bypass the CBD and making it easier, faster and safer to get around Sydney.

The project’s inclusive employment model contributes to its broader sustainability goals, ensuring infrastructure benefits extend beyond physical outcomes.

ACCIONA’s initiatives on the Western Harbour Tunnel reflect a long-term commitment to reshaping the construction industry through inclusive practices, community partnerships, and sustainable workforce development.
