ACCIONA has been recognised for outstanding sustainability achievements in Melbourne, with two Southern Program Alliance (SPA) projects recently receiving high ratings from the Infrastructure Sustainability Council (ISC).

The Glen Huntly and Parkdale level crossing removal projects were celebrated for their environmental innovation and community-focused design.

Syd Phillips, General Manager of the Southern Program Alliance, attended the ISC presentation alongside colleagues and industry professionals.

“These ratings reflect the hard work and vision of our teams to embed sustainability into every stage of delivery,” Syd said.

“From low-carbon concrete to green spaces, we’re building infrastructure that supports both people and the planet.”

Glen Huntly:

The Glen Huntly project received an As-Built ‘Leading’ Rating with a score of 82, the highest category awarded by the ISC.

Key initiatives included the installation of 60 kW solar panels and a 20 kL rainwater tank at the new station, contributing to a 44% improvement in operational power efficiency. The project also achieved a 5-star Green Star Certification for Australian Excellence.

Innovative materials played a central role, with an average 40% replacement of cementitious materials across in-situ concrete.

A standout example was the use of 70% low-carbon concrete in the new pocket park near Neerim Road. The relocation and replanting of 15 mature Canary Island date palms further demonstrated the project's commitment to preserving local biodiversity.

Two Australian innovations were certified during the works: high-visibility vests and environmental controls made from recycled materials, enhancing both safety and sustainability.

Parkdale:

The Parkdale project received a Design ‘Excellent’ Rating with a score of 69, recognising its forward-thinking approach to landscape and resource management.

The project will see the planting of 100,000 trees, shrubs, and grasses—restoring green space and “putting the park back in Parkdale.”

 Parkdale Station

Water captured in the rail viaduct will be reused for irrigation, and solar panels and rainwater tanks have been installed to support station operations.

New recreational areas have been created along the rail corridor, including basketball courts, open gyms, and shared user paths.

Construction was supported by electric vehicles and plant equipment funded through the ACCIONA Decarbonisation Fund.

One Australian innovation, a recycled silt sock, is currently undergoing verification.

These achievements highlight ACCIONA’s commitment to delivering infrastructure that connects communities while prioritising environmental responsibility.

The Glen Huntly and Parkdale projects set a benchmark for sustainable design and construction in Australia’s transport sector.

ACCIONA will continue to integrate sustainability into future projects, ensuring long-term benefits for both people and the environment.
