ACCIONA and its delivery partners celebrated the opening of the new Mordialloc Station on the Frankston line in Melbourne in May. Trains are now running on an elevated viaduct and two more level crossings having been eliminated as part of the Level Crossing Removal Project.

Removal of Level Crossings Improves Safety and Traffic Flow in Mordialloc and Aspendale

Building on the removal of the Bear Street boom gates in 2025, the removal of the McDonald Street boom gate in Mordialloc, and the Station Street Aspendale boom gate in May, further improves traffic flow and safety for drivers and pedestrians. The works also included two new rail viaducts, all new mainline rail and sidings, and the opening of the Nepean Highway link road, providing significant benefits for the local community.

VIDA Rail and Southern Program Alliance Reach Major Project Milestone

The project marks the removal of the 89th and 90th level crossings delivered by VIDA Rail, and the 20th and 21st crossings removed by the Southern Program Alliance (SPA), a joint venture between ACCIONA, WSP and MTM.

Careful Planning Drives Successful Project Delivery

Anthony Brasacchio, Project Manager, highlighted the planning behind the successful delivery. "Before the major planned shutdown, we maximised the amount of offline construction completed, delivering on the commitments we made at tender," Mr Brasacchio said.

"One of the things I am most proud of is the number of team members who have told me this is the best planned shutdown they have ever been involved in. We have delivered a legacy for the Mordialloc and Aspendale communities, and it is a direct reflection of the team's efforts throughout the entire project."

New Mordialloc Station Designed to Reflect the Local Community

The new Mordialloc Station has been designed with a strong connection to the local area. Native planting, materials and colours reflect Mordialloc's identity as a beachside community, while sculptural verandas create a sense of arrival for passengers. The heritage water tower remains as a precinct centrepiece, with landscaping designed to echo the flow of water, preserving an important element of local history.

Ongoing Works to Enhance Accessibility and Local Infrastructure

Continuing works include finalising landscaping, completing car parking and road upgrades in Mordialloc, and improving pedestrian and cyclist connections. In Aspendale, crews are delivering a new turning circle near Mordialloc College for safer school pick-up and drop-off, as well as additional parking and intersection upgrades.

The completion of these major works represents a significant improvement in safety and accessibility for the community, while supporting continued progress on the Level Crossing Removal Project across Melbourne's rail network.
