ACCIONA, as part of the ActivUs consortium (ActivUs), has been awarded the design and construction contract for the major rail works package of the $5.75 billion Logan and Gold Coast Faster Rail (LGC) project and recently signed the Project Alliance Agreement, formally establishing the LGC Rail Alliance between the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR), Queensland Rail and ActivUs.
As part of the LGC Rail Alliance, ACCIONA alongside ActivUs partners CPB Contractors, UGL, SMEC and WSP, will help deliver the Queensland Government’s LGC project.
The LGC major rail package of works includes:
- doubling the rail tracks from two to four between Kuraby and Beenleigh, including all civil works and civil structures
- modern and accessible station upgrades, including improved park ‘n’ ride facilities
- level crossing removals at Woodridge, Bethania, Holmview and Beenleigh
- changes to the local road network and improved walking and cycling connections to stations
- upgraded rail systems, including conventional signalling and enabling works for the new digital European Train Control System (ETCS).
The $5.75 billion LGC project is jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland governments, on a 50:50 basis.
The LGC project will unlock additional train services, to meet the growing travel demand between Brisbane and the Gold Coast, ahead of the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
This sustainable transport solution will make it easier for customers to access high frequency rail services, as well as improving safety and reducing traffic congestion for local communities through level crossing removals.
ACCIONA CEO Australia and New Zealand, Bede Noonan said ACCIONA is proud to bring their local expertise to deliver this project.
“ACCIONA is delivering significant projects across Australia that are contributing to positive outcomes for communities. Our team brings an innovative and collaborative approach to deliver better, smarter more sustainable solutions and we look forward to delivering this for Queensland.”
ACCIONA Queensland Regional Director, David Balmer said the Logan and Gold Coast Faster Rail project will improve community connectivity and increase the capacity of services between Brisbane and the Gold Coast.
“The ACCIONA team is excited to be commencing work alongside our LGC Rail Alliance partners including the Department of Transport and Main Roads, and Queensland Rail, to design and deliver these critical upgrades for the people of South East Queensland.”
The Rail Alliance has commenced site investigations along the project corridor and is progressing with the design development of station precincts, the rail corridor and associated infrastructure.
Site establishment activities and early works are planned to commence in the first half of 2026, ahead of major construction works starting later next year.
