The tool, developed through ACCIONA’s Internal Challenge initiative, has significantly reduced the time required to complete SWMS documentation—from up to three hours to just minutes—while improving accuracy, consistency, and compliance.
ACCIONA has been announced as a finalist in the Best WHS Technology Innovation Award category at the 2025 Australian Workplace Health and Safety Awards for its in-house AI tool, which is designed to streamline the Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) process across major infrastructure projects nationwide.
The tool, developed through ACCIONA’s Internal Challenge initiative, has significantly reduced the time required to complete SWMS documentation—from up to three hours to just minutes—while improving accuracy, consistency, and compliance. It was successfully trialled at the Western Harbour Tunnel, Southern Program Alliance, and M80 Ring Road Completion projects, and is now in use across another 17 ACCIONA sites with more than 350 active users.
Guillem Clemente, Group Head of Corporate Development & Innovation, said the tool was built by employees with direct experience of the challenges faced on site. "The SWMS solution was created by our employees who have a strong connection to the problem, our frontline workers, and our projects," Mr Clemente said. "The result is more succinct, accurate, better-informed SWMS, produced 20 times faster."
SWMS documents are a critical safety requirement across ACCIONA’s construction sites, outlining high-risk activities, associated hazards, and mitigation measures. The AI tool draws on ACCIONA’s internal AIMS platform to ensure alignment with company policies and legislative requirements, producing structured and compliant documentation with minimal manual input.
Sambit Das, Principal Data Scientist, highlighted the tool’s impact on productivity. "According to many engineers we have spoken to on site, it often takes up to three hours to write up, review, and complete a SWMS," Mr Das said. "This new tool drastically reduces the time spent doing this to a few minutes, allowing them more time to deliver their scope of work."
The tool allows users to input work activity details into a text field, including plant and machinery movement and other relevant information. Once sufficient data is entered, the AI generates a completed SWMS, identifying hazards, recommending mitigation measures, outlining PPE requirements, and citing relevant internal policies.
Following its initial rollout, the tool is being expanded to support subcontractors. By uploading their own SWMS documents, subcontractors will receive a version formatted to ACCIONA’s template, along with suggestions to address any gaps in hazard control and compliance.
The AI tool reflects ACCIONA’s commitment to innovation and safety, demonstrating how emerging technologies can enhance operational efficiency while protecting workers. Its recognition at the national WHS awards highlights its potential to influence industry-wide practices.
