ACCIONA has received the Climate Change Innovation Award at the 2025 Rockingham Kwinana Chamber of Commerce/Mineral Resources Regional Business Awards for its Kwinana Energy Recovery (KER) Facility in Western Australia, recognising its pioneering role in redefining waste as an energy source and advancing sustainable infrastructure.

The awards ceremony was held in Rockingham on 13 September and celebrated regional business excellence. ACCIONA’s facility was honoured for its environmental innovation and contribution to a circular economy through energy recovery from non-recyclable waste.

Scott Reynolds, General Manager at the Kwinana Energy Recovery Facility, accepted the award on behalf of the team. “This award is a testament to the incredible effort of the entire ACCIONA team, not only in delivering an iconic project but in successfully bringing this business into full operation,” Mr Reynolds said. “It also reflects the strength of our partnerships in providing innovative and reliable services to local governments and businesses. Most importantly, it recognises the profound environmental and sustainability benefits of energy recovery and the role it plays in shaping a cleaner, more resilient future.”

As Australia’s first energy recovery facility, KER converts up to 460,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste into 38 megawatts of renewable power annually, enough to supply over 55,000 homes in Perth. Since becoming operational, the facility has diverted more than 180,000 tonnes of waste from landfill, recovered over 3,500 tonnes of valuable metals, and pioneered the reuse of Incinerator Bottom Ash Aggregate in construction applications.

The award highlights KER’s role in reducing emissions, creating local jobs, and setting a new benchmark for alternative waste solutions Australia. It also underscores ACCIONA’s commitment to delivering innovative solutions that make a positive contribution to society.

ACCIONA invests, develops and operates infrastructure that supports Australia’s transition to a low-carbon economy, with the Kwinana Energy Recovery Facility serving as a model for future projects that combine environmental responsibility with economic and social value.
