Somerton sits 26 kilometres north of the Port of Melbourne at the Austrak Business Park, with the Hume Highway on its doorstep and direct access to two rail networks at once: the interstate standard gauge corridor and Victoria's broad gauge regional lines.
That dual connection is the whole point. Imports can be pulled from the port by rail, repacked, and pushed back out across the country — without ever touching a long-haul truck.
ACCIONA delivered the Somerton Intermodal Terminal for the Intermodal Terminal Company, turning a 45-hectare site in Melbourne's northern industrial zone into one of Australia's largest pieces of freight infrastructure.
Sitting 26 kilometres north of the Port of Melbourne, the terminal connects to both the interstate standard gauge corridor and Victoria's broad gauge network, so containers can be pulled from the port by rail and pushed back out across the country without a long-haul truck.
Delivery covered more than 10 kilometres of track, 30 turnouts built to ARTC standards with Salix, integrated crane rail systems and 110 separate concrete pours. According to the Intermodal Terminal Company, at full capacity Somerton is expected to remove up to 500,000 truck trips from Melbourne's roads each year.
