The Jávea desalination plant has been built, operated and maintained by ACCIONA. It has a production capacity of 28,000 m³ of drinking water per day. Using reverse osmosis, the plant takes in seawater and, after desalinating it, discharges the brine – which has a higher salt concentration – back into the sea.

The Valencian Community is one of Spain’s most popular tourist regions, and during the summer months, demand for water increases considerably. The desalination plant helps to guarantee the water supply without overexploiting the area’s natural water resources. The desalination plant was a major investment undertaken by Xàbia Town Council, as it arose from a consensus amongst the local community in response to summers of extreme drought, during which residents and tourists had to fill water bottles from street taps.
