ACCIONA, in a consortium with Fletcher, will design and construct various stages of the Eastern Busway, part of Auckland’s transport system in New Zealand and one of the most critical infrastructure projects in the city.

The ACCIONA consortium are responsible for works totalling NZ$700 million (€400 million). Engineering firms Aecom and Jacobs will collaborate on the design side.

The project includes the construction of 5km of busway, including a 590-metre flyover (Rā Hihi) over Reeves Road to connect Pakuranga Road with the Southeastern Arterial Highway, 12km of safe and separated walking and cycling routes, and five new bus stations.

In 2026, the Eastern Busway Alliance, in which ACCIONA works alongside Auckland Transport, Fletcher Construction, AECOM and Jacobs in partnership with mana whenua, started construction on the final stage of the Eastern Busway. This last section of dedicated busway links Tī Rākau Drive and Botany Town Centre, and will also create new walking and cycling connections through Whakamaumahara Guys Reserve.

Once complete in 2027, the Eastern Busway will provide a rapid transit corridor between Panmure, Pakūranga and Botany, with journeys from Botany to Auckland’s city centre taking around 40 minutes using bus and rail connections.

By 2028, the busway will carry 18,000 passengers per day, more than four times the 3,700 bus passengers per day before COVID-19.

By 2048 it is expected to increase to 24,000 passengers per day.
