    Steel Cement Slag Grinding Mill

Steel Cement is a manufacturing arm with purpose-build, blending facilities, which supplies Independent Cement with combinations of cementitious materials, including environmentally preferable Ecoblend. John Beever Australia (an ACCIONA Company) was engaged for the construction of a new plant for Steel Cement in Yarraville (Victoria, Australia).

    General information

    Client: Steel Cement

    Contract: Construct Only

    Contract Value: $5.3 Million (AUD)

    Location: Yarraville (Victoria, Australia)

    Duration: November 2015- August 2016

Infrastructure: Steel Cement is building a UBE Vertical Roller Mill, Raw Material Storage and Handling Facility and a Finished Product Storage Silo to increase its ability to meet current and future demands. The purpose of this plant is to receive slag (which is a by-product from hot rolling steel) via bulk cargo ships and process it into a valuable element that can be used in general blend cement products.

Key Details: John Beever undertook two contracts for the Cement Slag Grinding Mill Works, this included the Mechanical and Structural Construction Contract and the Materials Handling Installation Contract, with the scope of works for each contract detailed below.

    Mechanical and Structural Construction Contract

    • Structural Steel: Erection of 300t of structural steel for VRM structure, Storage Shed extension, Filter Building, Silo Access Tower, Silo Support, Ducting Supports and numerous small structures. The erection of the 33 meter high 3000t bolted steel silo was built from the ground up using a two stage hydraulic jacking system. The tank was raised using a combination of thirty jacks, each with a capacity of 5t. Over 30,000 bolts were used to build the tank.
    • Mechanical Installation: UBE Vertical Roller Mill (VRM): SCL assigned 12,600 man hours to install the Japanese made mill. JBA were able to install the VRM in 10,100 man hours. This was 2,500 man hours under the SCL allocated hours for this activity, resulting in significant cost savings

    Materials handling installation contract

    • Structural Steel: Erection of 250t of structural steel for Crusher Building, Raw Material Storage Building, Conveyor Transfer and Take Up Towers, Conveyor Support Trestles and five fully enclosed Conveyor Galleries.

Key achievements: Through innovative initiatives JBA were able to implement time saving installation methods that resulted in significant cost savings for the client.
