ACCIONA lays the first light rail track which will link the Sydney CBD with the Southeast

12 August 2016 ACCIONA participated in an event to mark laying the first light rail tracks that will connect Sydney’s CBD with the southeast of the city. In the event, celebrated in Kensington, Premier of New South Wales, Mike Baird had the honour of pouring the first concrete to cement the tracks in place, in the presence of the NSW’s Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Andrew Constance, Mike Millar, ACCIONA’s Project Director and Elliot Young, ACCIONA JV Delivery Director among others.

Sydney Light Rail which will connect the financial centre of Sydney and southeast area of the city and will be a critical part of Sydney’s transport future. The 12 kilometre route will have 19 stops. Services will depart every four minutes between Sydney CBD and Moore Park and every eight minutes to and from both Randwick and Kingsford in Sydney’s South East, between 7am and 7pm.

A total of 60 air-conditioned electric carriages operating in 30 coupled sets will carry up to 450 people, equivalent to nine standard buses with a capacity of 13,500 passengers per hour (6,750 in each direction).

Construction is now underway in more than half of the construction zones along the alignment, with 16 of 31 zones now active. More tracks will be laid in multiple construction zones over the coming months. Construction is estimated to be completed in 2018 and services will be operational in 2019.

ACCIONA will build the infrastructure as part of ALTRAC Light Rail, an initiative of public-private partnership with the state government of New South Wales. The project includes the design, construction, financing, maintenance and operation of a new line linking Circular Quay with the suburbs east and south 

The CBD and South East Light Rail, combined with the bus network, will increase public transport capacity. It will provide sustainable and reliable modern transport from the CBD to Sydney’s South East that will meet the needs of the community now and into the future.
