ACCIONA scholarship supports twins' agriculture passion

12/12/2013

Jennifer and Jessica recently completed Year 12 at Crookwell High School and will receive $2,500 each to assist with the costs of tertiary study.

Crookwell twins Jennifer and Jessica Impey are delighted to be the winners of the tertiary education scholarship from ACCIONA, the global renewable energy business which owns and operates the Gunning Wind Farm.

Jennifer and Jessica recently completed Year 12 at Crookwell High School and will receive $2,500 each to assist with the costs of tertiary study.

Jennifer plans to use the scholarship to study a Bachelor of Agricultural Science at Charles Sturt University in Wagga Wagga, while Jessica plans to study a Certificate IV in Agriculture at Tocal Agricultural College, near Maitland.

ACCIONA offers the education scholarship through its Gunning Wind Farm Community Benefit Fund.  The scholarship is in its third year and was offered to all prospective tertiary students from the Gunning, Gurrundah, Crookwell, Dalton and Breadalbane areas looking to undertake tertiary study in 2014.

Jennifer and Jessica were selected as the winners of the ACCIONA education scholarship based on selection criteria which included academic merit, commitment to their studies, school activities and responsibilities and their general involvement in the local community.

As the successful recipients, Jennifer and Jessica will use the scholarship to assist with course tuition fees, accommodation expenses, study materials and travel expenses to and from university.

Jennifer is delighted to be the winner of the ACCIONA education scholarship, along with her twin sister.

“The scholarship will support me in my goal to have a career in agriculture,” Jennifer said.

Jessica plans to live on campus at Tocal, but will return home to work on the family farm in between study.

“The scholarship will assist with my study costs, while I am studying at Tocal.  I will miss our cattle stud, but I am sure it will be well looked after while we are away,” Jessica said.

Site Manager of ACCIONA’s Gunning Wind Farm Craig Simon said the scholarship reflects ACCIONA’s commitment to the local community and there was increased recognition of the scholarship program, now in its third consecutive year, from aspiring students in the Gunning and surrounding area.

“ACCIONA believes it is important to support the local community and invest in the future.  The scholarship is aimed at reducing some of the financial obstacles that regional and rural students face in following their dreams.”

“Jennifer and Jessica’s applications both demonstrated a great combination of academic merit and involvement in their school and local community.  We are very pleased to be offering the twins a scholarship that will assist in their tertiary studies and we look forward to following their journeys in agriculture,” Mr Simon said.

ACCIONA operates the Gunning Wind Farm in the Upper Lachlan Shire, a $150 million renewable energy project which has made a significant economic, job and investment contribution to the Gunning and surrounding region.
