Miners Rest student Darcie Bleicher is delighted to be the winner of the inaugural $5,000 tertiary education scholarship from ACCIONA, the global renewable energy business which owns and operates the Waubra Wind Farm.

Darcie recently completed Year 12 at Ballarat High School and plans to use the scholarship to study a Bachelor of Science at the University of Melbourne in 2014.

ACCIONA offers the education scholarship through its Waubra Wind Farm Community Benefit Fund.  The inaugural scholarship was offered to all prospective tertiary students from the Waubra and surrounding local areas looking to undertake tertiary study in 2014.

Darcie was selected as the winner of the inaugural ACCIONA education scholarship based on selection criteria which included academic merit, commitment to her studies, school activities and responsibilities and her involvement in the local community.

As the successful recipient, Darcie will use the scholarship to assist with course tuition fees, accommodation expenses, study materials and travel expenses to and from university.

“I am delighted to be the first-time winner of the ACCIONA education scholarship.  The scholarship will help me further my studies and support me in my goal to have a career in science,” Ms Bleicher said.

Site Manager of ACCIONA’s Waubra Wind Farm Melanie Robertson said the scholarship reflects ACCIONA’s commitment to the local community and the competitive scholarship program had drawn a high standard of entries from aspiring students.

“ACCIONA believes it is important to support the local community and invest in the future.  The scholarship is aimed at reducing some of the financial obstacles that regional and rural students face in following their dreams.”

“Darcie’s application demonstrated a great combination of academic merit and involvement in her school and the local community.  We are very pleased to be offering Darcie a scholarship that will assist her in her tertiary studies and we look forward to following her journey into science,” Ms Robertson said.

ACCIONA operates the Waubra Wind Farm in the Pyrenees Shire, a $450 million renewable energy project which has made a significant economic, job and investment contribution to the Waubra and surrounding Ballarat region.
