ACCIONA’s design for the development of the Western Harbour Tunnel - Sydney’s third harbour crossing - reduces construction impacts on the community and on the environment while also delivering cost efficiencies.
Our design and methodology shifted from constructing an immersed tube tunnel to deploying the largest Tunnel Boring Machine in the Southern Hemisphere.
It eliminates the need to dredge Sydney Harbour, reduces the number of construction support sites so not disrupting local communities, and reduces impacts to ferries and boats on Sydney Harbour.
Rookwood Weir is Australia's largest weir built since World War II, delivering critical water security and flood mitigation for Central Queensland.
Innovative design features include the world’s first turtle passage - a 172-metre textured ramp with resting pools, based on extensive turtle behaviour research which enables the turtles to cross the weir and make their way up and down stream. Rookwood Weir has been recognised for supporting local communities through jobs as well as its sustainable design practices.
Rookwood Weir demonstrates how infrastructure can challenge the present to make the future possible through sustainable engineering.
The world’s first surfboard made from decommissioned wind turbine blades.
We created surfboards as part of our Turbine Made initiative, which explores innovative ways to repurpose retired wind turbine blades into new materials and products.
By transforming a retired blade into surfboards, we’re not only reducing waste but also pushing the boundaries of sustainable innovation in the renewable energy sector. The board features recycled fiberglass fins and precision-cut turbine blade flex strips to deliver customised performance. The turbine particulate is also infused throughout the glassing process to enhance overall durability and strength.
Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO), is a renewable diesel fuel made from used cooking oil from restaurants and food processing.
According to the National Greenhouse Gas and Energy Reporting Scheme, HVO is considered to reduce the vast majority of Scope 1 emissions (tailpipe emissions) compared to traditional diesel.
ACCIONA is one of the first in our industry to trial HVO on our projects, and by doing so, we are not just reducing our own emissions, we are collaborating with others to encourage the wider adoption of HVO and help to kick-start a domestic HVO industry.
