ACCIONA has built a strong presence in New Zealand through major transport and infrastructure projects that improve connectivity and support long term growth.
Our work includes the Ara Tūhono – Pūhoi to Warkworth motorway, an 18.5 kilometre highway extension delivered as ACCIONA’s first project in the country, along with our contribution of global design expertise showcased during its official opening.
We also play a key role in the Eastern Busway Alliance in Auckland, where the partnership has been recognised for innovation and continues to strengthen local capability and community connection.
The Ara Tūhono – Pūhoi to Warkworth motorway is ACCIONA’s first project in New Zealand. It delivers an 18.5 kilometre four lane extension of the North Highway from the Johnstone Hills tunnels to North Warkworth.
ACCIONA brought its global experience to lead the technical, execution and completion phases of the project, including the Intelligent Transport Systems integration.
The project team has also been recognised for its work to protect local waterways during construction and has received industry awards in New Zealand for its performance
ACCIONA's first project in New Zealand won the 2024 Hynds Supreme Award, at the Civil Contractors New Zealand awards.
The Puhoi to Warkworth Project, delivered by the Fletcher ACCIONA Joint Venture, is an 18.5-kilometre four-lane Highway extension.
The project also won the Category E award, for projects over $50m. In 2023, the Puhoi to Warkworth Project was awarded the world’s highest sustainability rating by the Greenroads Sustainable Transport Council.
It is only the third Greenroads project to be certified outside North America since the inception of the Project Qualification Program in 2010.
In just 29 shifts, ACCIONA and our Eastern Busway partners delivered a complex intersection upgrade that would normally take five months.
The team finished on time and under budget, kept disruption to road users and businesses to a minimum, and accelerated the program by opening new work areas along Ti Rākau Drive ahead of schedule.
This result shows what strong collaboration and smart planning can achieve on a major transport project.
